MANDATED REPORTER TRAINING FOR CERTAIN VOLUNTEERS — SB 848 - Effective July 1, 2026, California law expands mandated reporter requirements to include certain school volunteers. A volunteer is covered when the volunteer is over 18 years of age and interacts with students outside the immediate supervision and control of a school employee. Covered volunteers must complete mandated reporter training before serving in volunteer roles that involve responsibility for students without direct staff supervision, including supervising, transporting, mentoring, overnight chaperoning, or otherwise being responsible for students. Volunteers who assist staff during classroom activities, school events, or day field trips do not need to complete this separate volunteer training when students remain under the supervision and responsibility of school employees. District employees who also serve as approved volunteers do not need to complete separate volunteer training as they already complete mandated reporter training annually as employees.
